Begonia 'Reiger'

  • Description
  • Light/Soil/Water
  • Hardiness
  • Rieger Begonias are sophisticated hybrids, resulting from a cross between tuberous Begonias (for large flowers) and Wax Begonias (for continuous blooming). The result is a compact, mounding plant featuring beautiful glossy foliage that serves as a backdrop for an extraordinary abundance of flowers.

Rieger Begonias are modern hybrids, first developed in Germany by Otto Rieger, specifically bred to be outstanding houseplants that bloom profusely during winter months. Their genetics combine traits from various tropical and subtropical species.

The most spectacular feature of the Rieger Begonia is its masses of unique, colorful blooms. The flowers are an interesting combination of both single and double-petaled forms produced simultaneously on the same plant. These dainty yet numerous blooms add constant cheer and exceptional color to any room, often available in brilliant shades of yellow, orange, pink, or red.

  • Place near an East or West-facing window. Insufficient light will reduce flowering, but direct summer sun may scorch the leaves.

Keep the soil consistently moist, but never soggy. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain completely. Avoid watering the foliage to prevent powdery mildew.
Use a quality potting mix amended with extra perlite or orchid bark to ensure excellent aeration and drainage.

This plant should be fertilized once during the growing season (spring/summer) with diluted houseplant fertilizer.

  • 10-11 (Best kept as an indoor plant due to its sensitivity to cold and high humidity requirements).
